Anti-Tr antibodies

Synonyms: PCA-Tr

Clinical associations: Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD).

Tumor associations: Hodgkin disease, rarely, non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Frequency of anti-Tr antibodies in patients with suspected PCD without evidence of cancer: 11% (3/28)

Frequency of anti-Tr antibodies in patients with Hodgkin disease alone:
0% (30 cases studies)

Screening test:
Immunohistochemistry on frozen rat or mouse cerebellar sections. (figure).

Figure: Rat cerebellum incubated with anti-Tr antibodies. There is staining of the cytoplasm of Purkinje cells and the molecular cell layer with a fine punctate reactivity.

Confirmatory test:
Not available. Antibody not detected by immunoblot

Immunologic associations:
Patients with anti-Tr antibodies frequently have anti-MAZ (myc-associated zinc-finger protein) antibodies. In one study 16 of 19 patients presented both antibodies. However, anti-MAZ antibodies were also present in 16 of 131 controls.
